FRAMINGHAM, MA – The Lasell College women’s volleyball team swept a tri-match this afternoon defeating both Framingham State University and Daniel Webster College in five sets by a score of 3-2, while in the days other match the Rams defeated Daniel Webster 3-0.
After the two victories, the Lasers improve to 6-5 on the year and the Rams move to 7-5, while the Eagles suffer their first two losses of the season and are now 6-2.
Lasell won a hard fought match to open the day defeating the Rams 3-2. Framingham State took the opening set by a score of 25-22 before Lasell responded winning the next two 26-24 and 25-18. Lasell held the lead for most of the fourth set before the Rams rallied to tie the score at 20-20 on a kill by junior Jackie Friel (Centerville, Mass.) and again at 22-22 on a kill by freshman Ashley Nee (Hanson, Mass.) before eventually winning the set 25-23.
In a tight fifth and final game, the Rams opened up a 5-0 lead before Lasell came storming back to knot the score at 5 all. The game continued to go back and forth until Lasell pulled ahead by two at 14-12 on a Framingham State error and the Lasers were able to close out the set and the match to secure the victory.
In the day’s second match, Daniel Webster College opened up a 2-0 lead after winning two tightly contested sets by scores of 26-24 and 25-23. The Lasers responded by taking the next two sets easily 25-18 and 25-16 forcing a deciding fifth game.
In the fifth game, Lasell took a 7-5 lead on an ace by senior Daneille Drapeau (Biddeford, ME). The Lasers extended their lead to five on two occasions at 10-5 and 12-7 before the Eagles rallied and pulled within one (13-12) on a kill by junior Samantha Hill (Hudson, NH). That was as close as they would come as the Lasers scored the matches final two points to secure their second 3-2 victory of the day.
In the days final match the Rams easily won the first two sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-15. The Eagles would not go away quietly in the third as they rallied from a 17-11 deficit to pull within one at 20-19. The Rams were able to hold off the late surge by Daniel Webster as they regained possession and freshman Courtney Wilbur (Braintree, Mass.) served the final three points of the match.
Sophomore Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, Mass.) led the Rams attack with 27 kills in the two matches to go along with six aces, while freshman Kayla Bertrand (Agawam, Mass.) recorded 43 digs on the day. Friel finished the day with seven blocks, while Nee added three.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday as they host Elms College in a non-conference match beginning at 7 p.m., the Lasers resume action on Tuesday at Rhode Island College at 7 p.m., while the Eagles return to action Thursday with a match at Wentworth at 7 p.m.
