Dr. Sheri Phillips, Cancer Survivor in (2010) 3-day Walk for the Cure
Dr. Sheri Phillips, National Spokesperson for the ''3-Day for the Cure'' organization, shown here during a 2010 walk.

FRAMINGHAM, MA– The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure is a 60-mile walk to fund breast cancer research and support local community education, screening and treatment programs.

This year (2011) the Boston 3-Day is July 22nd, 23rd and 24th, and the Opening Ceremony and starting point for the Boston walk is again at Farm Pond in Framingham!

The Boston 3-Day begins Friday morning, July 22, 2011.  Crew members should arrive at 4:00 a.m., walkers should arrive between 5:00 a.m. – 6:00 a.m., and the Opening Ceremony, which begins with community stretching is at 6:30 a.m.

I had a chance to speak with Dr. Sheri Phillips, this year’s National Spokesperson for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure organization.

At the start of the interview, I said “I’ll ask some questions, and if any are too personal, or you prefer not to answer, or want me to leave anything out — let me know.”

Sheri, the Homewood, Illinois mother of two teenage daughters, and a practicing physician for the past 18 years who is now a 2-year survivor of breast cancer said, “None of it is too personal.  Information is power. It’s important to get as much information as possible out to others and raise awareness not only with those who (more…)

Bruins Tickets Raffle to Support Framingham Boy’s Battle with Cancer

FRAMINGHAM, MA – Tramiris Anthony is a 9 year old boy from Framingham, MA. He has always been a healthy, happy and athletic child, enjoying sports, videogames and, of course, playing with his friends.

In early April, just three months after his ninth birthday, Tramiris wasn’t feeling well — he awoke one night with severe dizziness and vomiting, symptoms which continued over the next few days.

Doctors suspected a virus, but when his nausea persisted over the following weeks he was ordered to undergo an MRI, revealing a tumor in his cerebellum.

  • Clinical Trials at Metrowest Medical Center

FRAMINGHAM, MA – The final phase of drug or medical therapy testing usually involves “clinical trials” — testing on human beings who volunteer to participate.

The U.S. National Institute of Health closely monitors these trials and publishes information about such programs on their www.ClinicalTrials.gov website.

Metrowest Medical Center, (the former “Framingham Union Hospital“), hosts several cancer related trials. A recent search of the site found several trials which are currently recruiting subjects for studies ranging from “observational” (no therapy or drug is administered, subjects are examined or monitored in hopes of discovering new information about a particular medical study), to clinical trials for as-yet (FDA) unapproved therapies or medicines.

If you are interested in participating, it is suggested that you first visit the www.ClinicalTrials.com website and review the criteria for participants, then consult your doctor before contacting the recruiter for a particular trial.
