  • Digital Billboards

Clear Channel Communications' two-sided digital billboard, I-495, Lawrence, MA.

FRAMINGHAM, MA – Urban blight. Billboards.  Downtown Framingham has billboards and most in town would like to see them gone.  The majority of the billboards are owned and maintained by Clear Channel Communications, (www.clearchannel.com).

The problem for the Town is that the billboards are “grandfathered“, meaning they were erected when no sign bylaws prohibited them, so the Town can’t just order them removed.

  • Summer Jobs Program for Framingham-area Youth

FRAMINGHAM, MA – Future Skills Institute (FSI), a young adult career and jobs center in Framingham, has been awarded funding through the state’s YouthWorks program to provide job-readiness training and subsidized internships to youth aged 16-21.

FSI is currently seeking low-income youth as well as Framingham-area employers to participate in the program. Private businesses, public agencies, and non-profit organizations are needed to provide meaningful summer work experiences for young people, at little to no cost to the employer.

Participating youth will receive work-readiness and work-retention training prior to placement at a worksite, and will be supported by FSI staff throughout their internships. FSI Career Specialists will work with participants to match them with internships based on their interests and career goals.

This is FSI’s third year administering the YouthWorks program in Framingham. Last summer, YouthWorks funding supported 32 youth in subsidized internships at area businesses and non-profit agencies for 8-10 weeks. With additional funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), this year’s program will also include pre-apprenticeship training and work opportunities for low-income young people (18-24) in the carpentry, electrical, laborer, operator engineering, painting, plumbing, and sheet-metal trades.

The YouthWorks and Building Trades Exploration programs are targeted particularly to low-income youth, but FSI job assistance and career exploration services are open to all young adults between the ages of 16 and 24. Future Skills Institute is an initiative of the Metro-South West Regional Employment Board Inc., (MSWREB).

For more information about summer work opportunities, contact FSI at 508-875-0223, or stop by their office at 68 Henry Street in downtown Framingham.

  • Who are OIF/OEF Veterans?

FRAMINGHAM, MA – Today Americans from many Massachusetts cities and towns, including Framingham are at war.

Officially, the “War in Iraq” and the “War in Afghanistan” are classified as service in either “Operation Iraqi Freedom” or “Operation Enduring Freedom”.

American servicemen and servicewomen are returning to the USA every day from Iraq, Afghanistan and other deployments around the world.

Whether or not you agree with the politics of a particular war — we must welcome these men and women back to the USA in a way which validates and honors their time served and the personal sacrifices they and their families have made in defense of our country.

We can not let another generation of veterans endure the suffering that Vietnam era veterans endured after they returned home.

While many of today’s returning vets have visible scars; missing limbs, broken bodies, burns and other injuries we can see — even more carry the invisible scars of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, (PTSD), and many have suffered varying degrees of  traumatic brain injury, (which can cause problems with cognitive, psychological, occupational and socialization issues even though the person “appears to be fine”).

Below are some of the resources available to OIF/OEF Veterans:

    • Framingham Department of Veterans’ Services – 150 Concord St. Rm 35B, (in the Memorial Building), info can be found by going to the Town website at:  www.framinghamma.gov and entering “veteran” in the search box, or by calling (508) 532-5515.

    • OIF/OEF Veterans of Massachusetts –  an organization, (also known as “Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of Massachusetts”), works on many issues including monitoring legislation related to employment, health care, education, tax benefits, entrepreneurship and many other veteran related issues.  They have a website at: www.oifoef.org, (they are also active on Facebook — just enter OIF/OEF in the Facebook  search box) or call (617) 372-8200.

The Great Falls at Saxonville, as water from 1955’s Hurricane Diane pounds its way over the falls.

FRAMINGHAM, MA — A preliminary report about hurricane DIANE  from the U.S. Weather Bureau begins to tell the story of how more than a foot of water fell on Framingham one week during the summer of 1955.

“Hurricane DIANE was first detected Over the Atlantic Ocean on August 11, 1955, about 400 miles northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. With winds of 50 to 60 mph over a small area near the center, DIANE moved in a northwesterly to northerly direction for about 24 hours. On August 12th, DIANE drifted slowly toward the north and northeast and increased in intensity to a full huricane, with winds of 115 mph near the center.”

What the report only touches on, and the residents of Saxonville found out all too well, is the fact that DIANE hit the northeast on the heals of hurricane CONNIE, a storm which had hit 5 days earlier dumping 5″ – 10″ inches of rain in a single day.
