FRAMINGHAM, MA – At the J&M Diner on Old Connecticut Path in Framingham today, Elizabeth Warren met with voters after declaring herself a Democratic contender in the race for the seat now held by U.S. Senator Scott Brown, (R-MA).
The seat which some referred to as “Ted Kennedy’s Seat” during the 2008 election that sent Scott Brown to Washington, had been occupied by Kennedy, the liberal lion from 1962 until his death on August 25, 2009, a reign of nearly 47 years for the former senior senator from Massachusetts.
Warren, a 62 year old mother of two adult children is; a Democrat, a Methodist, a former Sunday School teacher, an attorney, a Harvard Law Professor, a bankruptcy expert, an author, and according to her campaign website, “a consumer advocate known for standing up to big banks and financial institutions to fight for middle class families”.
Warren also has appeared on several t.v. shows as a financial commentator and appeared in political-financial related movies including “Maxed Out” (2006), and Michael Moore’s “Capitalism: A Love Story”, (2009).
Warren was included in Time Magazine’s list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” in both 2009 and 2010.
Warren’s husband, Bruce Mann is also a Harvard Law Professor. It is her second marriage. At the age of 19 Elizabeth married Jim Warren, a mathematician, and had two children with him, a daughter, Amelia Warren Tyagi and a son, Alexander Warren. The couple divorced in 1978.
Although Warren does not held an elected office — from September 17, 2010 until just 13 days before announcing her candidacy, (August 1, 2011), she served as an appointed Special Advisor for the United States Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and prior to that was appointed and served, (from November 25, 2008 until November 15, 2010), as the Chairman of the Congressional Oversight Panel for the “Troubled Assets Relief Program”, (TARP), the bank and financial industry bailout program undertaken by the U.S. Federal government.
It should be noted that Warren was first appointed during former President George W. Bush’s administration, and served in additional capacities under President Barack Obama’s administration.
Warren’s entry into the U.S. Senate race makes her the seventh Democratic candidate seeking to unseat Scott Brown.
