About Carol Getchell
Carol Getchell served as Principal of the Mary E. Stapleton Elementary School, (“Saxonville School”), for 27 years — from 1971 through her retirement in 1998.
She was was an avid nature lover and was also the Founder of the ”Friends of Saxonville’‘ organization and an early proponent of the creation of the nature trail which runs along the Sudbury River directly behind the school she so loved.
Fittingly, Stapleton parents raised money and surprised Carol with a big green canoe as a thank-you and retirement gift at an assembly at the end of the 1998 school year.
“Miss Getchell” died March 24, 2001. The Carol J. Getchell Nature Trail which was originally called the Saxonville Nature Trail was dedicated and renamed in her honor in the fall of 2001.
