  • Framingham Superintendent Finalists to Meet with Community

    FRAMINGHAM, MA — Three finalists for the position of Framingham superintendent of schools will meet with interested community members in a series of public forums on February 2, 3 and 4 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Cameron Middle School Auditorium at 215 Elm Street.

    The forum schedule is: Monday, February 2: Stephen Mills, Deputy Superintendent, Worcester Public Schools; Tuesday, February 3: Steven Hiersche, Superintendent, Watertown Public Schools; and Wednesday, February 4: David Fleishman, Superintendent, Chappaqua, New York.

    Each finalist will spend an entire day touring the Framingham Public Schools, meeting with staff, students and administrators.

    The School Committee will interview each finalist in public session in the King Building at 454 Water Street on February 2, 3 and 4, starting at 7:30 p.m.

  • Free Public Program on Heart Health

    FRAMINGHAM, MA — February is American Heart Month, and the Framingham Board of Health will be sponsoring their annual Healthy Heart Program on Tuesday February 10, 2009 at the Framingham Public Library.

    Heart Disease is the number one killer of women in the US, but research shows that eighty percent of cardiac events in women could be prevented if women make the right choices for their hearts, such as changing their eating habits, getting regular exercise, choosing not to smoke and managing their cholesterol and blood pressure.

    Dr Naomi Hamburg of BU School of Medicine and the Framingham Heart Study will speak about heart health. There will also be brief presentations on local heart healthy activities. Attendees will be able to get cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI, and bone density tests done and gather information from many community agencies.

    The program is free and everyone is encouraged to attend.

  • The Changing Business Landscape

    Walgreen's and the shopping plaza it's located in have undergone remodeling
    Walgreen's and the shopping plaza it's located in at 15 School St., Framingham, have undergone remodeling.

    As businesses, large, such as Linens N Things, Filene’s Basement, and Circuit City, and smaller, such as Fabric Place, Green Tea II, other businesses are opening and changing.

    Walgreen’s on School Street has expanded, and the entire shopping plaza is in the midst of the longest-taking facelift ever.  Some gas stations around town have changed their names and gas suppliers.  The Exxon on Edgell Road is now Gulf, and the former Mobil on Concord St. in Saxonville is now Riverside Gas.

    Even as businesses close and people are laid off, there are these and other indicators that there is still hope and optimism.  While there are areas that are down, Framingham isn’t out,  as new sprouts of activity keep popping up.
