“Nutcracker Sweet” Ballet Performance to Benefit Saxonville Athenaeum

Nutcracker Sweet – Ballet to Benefit the Athenaeum in Saxonville, December 6, 2014.

Saxonville, MA – The Athenaeum is getting a little help from its “Friends.” The Friends of Saxonville hosts Nutcracker Sweet, a ballet performance to benefit the Athenaeum in Saxonville, presented by Mass Ballet. The production will be a ballet in the round performed by students of Mass Ballet on Saturday, December 6th, 2014 at 5:00pm.

Although the exterior of the Athenaeum has been restored, the interior is in complete disrepair. The Friends goal is to raise funds to help with construction costs, provide furnishings and accessories, and assist the town with operating expense support.

Event highlights include boxed dinner for purchase, a cash bar of fine wine and beer, a brief review of the planned restoration of The Athenaeum Community Hall, a ballet in the round featuring selected pieces from the Nutcracker Suite presented by students of Mass Ballet, and topped off with “Sweet Endings”: a delicious selection of holiday sweets and beverages.

Event venue is generously donated by Megan Powers in the Dance Studio of Mass Ballet located in the Saxonville Mill, 2 Watson Place (not handicapped accessible). The recommended dress for the event is Casual.

Event Contribution is $15.00 per person or $40.00 per family of 4.

Boxed dinner (ordered online, in advance) is $10.00 for sandwich and snack.

Framingham State Captures 2014 MASCAC Volleyball Tournament Championship

Framingham, MA – Behind tournament MVP Alycia Rackliffe (Feeding Hills, MA), the Framingham State University volleyball team captured the 2014 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Volleyball Tournament Championship with a 3-0 victory over Worcester State University in the tournament finals at Framingham’s Athletic Center.

With the victory the Rams improve to 23-11 on the season and receive the MASCAC’s automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship with pairings and seedings being announced on Monday.

The top seed Rams opened the day defeating fourth seed Bridgewater State University 3-1 in one semifinal match, while second seed Worcester State defeated third seed Westfield State 3-1 in the other semifinal to reach the championship match against the Rams.

Bridgewater State took the first set from the Rams in thrilling fashion 25-23. The Rams took the second game 25-23 and rallied from a 20-17 deficit in the third to take that frame 25-21 before closing the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set.

Rackliffe led the Rams in the opener with 14 kills on 38 attempts with five blocks and seven digs, while sophomore Julia Wan (South Deerfield, MA) also picked up 14 kills to go along with 10 digs and two blocks. Junior Danielle Girard (Tivoli, NY) picked up a double double with 12 kills and 14 digs, while senior Maribeth Martin (Barnstable, MA) added 17 set assists.

The Bears were led by 17 kills and 10 digs from sophomore Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, RI). Freshman Christina Jaros (Plymouth, MA) chipped in with 12 kills and four blocks, while sophomore Charleyne Panner (Gilford, NH) added 21 assists.

The Rams cruised to the victory in the championship match defeating the Lancers 25-7, 25-16 and 25-22.

Rackliffe once again led the attack with 12 kills, two aces and two blocks, while Wan finished with seven kills, 15 digs and three assists. Girard closed the tournament with a five kill and 14 dig performance, while freshman Molly Meehan (Quincy, MA) chipped in with 14 digs.

The Lancers were led by 10 kills and 11 digs from senior Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, Mass.), while junior Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, Mass.) added 13 defensive digs.

Strong Second Half Leads FSU RAMS Football Past Bridgewater State

Framingham, MA – The Framingham State University football team scored 33 unanswered points, all in the second half, as the Rams defeated Bridgewater State University 33-10 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon at Bowditch Field.

With the win, the Rams clinch the 2014 MASCAC Football Championship as they improve to 8-1 on the year and remain perfect at 7-0 in the MASCAC. The Rams have won five straight MASCAC Titles. The loss drops the Bears to 4-5 on the year and 3-4 in the conference.

Bridgewater State’s defense was the story in the first half keeping the Rams offense scoreless despite being inside the Bears one yard line twice. The Bears defense came up with the stop on a 4th and goal from the one yard line with 1:43 left in the first. Then the Bears kept the Rams out of the end zone on a third and inches in the early stages of the second quarter forcing a field goal attempt that hit the upright.

The Bears offense took the game’s opening possession and drove 64 yards on 10 plays and capped the drive with a 20 yard field goal from Colin Neri (Upton, MA) to take a 3-0 lead with 10:12 showing in the first.

The game would remain 3-0 until the closing minutes of the half when the Bears took possession with less than a minute remaining and scored the game’s first touchdown on a 37 yard strike from Danny Higgins (Manahawkin, NJ) to Travis Bassett (Littleton, MA) with seven ticks on the clock.
