Three Hundred Years of Melody: Stephen James, Piano & Peter Zay, Cello

Each of the four pieces on this program – by Bach, Schubert, Prokofiev and award winning local composer Stephen James – was written roughly 100 years apart, beginning with the Bach Gamba Sonata in G. They belong to different countries: Germany, Russia and the U. S., and to different historical periods, yet each of these works is ultimately about melodic and harmonic beauty. From the complex textures of the baroque gamba sonata to the lyricism of Schubert; from the post-romantic Prokofiev to neo-romantic piano pieces by Dr. James, these are tunes meant to tug at your heart strings and maybe even get your toes tapping. The gorgeous sound of cellist Peter Zay, now Principal Cellist of the Plymouth Philharmonic and a regular performer in concerts in New England and Europe, is well suited to this music and joins with the lyricism of pianist/composer Stephen James, who has performed on many concert series in New England including the Tanglewood Music Center Chamber Series and the WICN Radio concert series at Mechanics Hall.
