Scholar-Led Book Discussion

“The Power of Ideas: High Achievers”7:00pm.Moderator Dr. Mary Murphy and guest speaker Dr. Margaret Carroll, Chair of the Biology Dept., Framingham State College, will explore A Clearing in the Distance: Frederick Law Olmsted and America in the 19th Century by Witold Rybczynski. Olmsted (1822-1903) is best known as the planner for New York City’s Central Park and Prospect Park, the grounds of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC and the campus of Stanford University. In addition to that, Professor Rybczynski contends that Olmsted was an “American original”, a 19th century success story whose vision encompassed viewing the American landscape as an extension of the national character.
