J.S. Bach’s Musical Offering: Bach Battles a King

7:00pm–Guest Speaker: Professor Gil Harel, CUNY Baruch College. Johann Sebastian Bach composed what many regard to be the most profound body of music in history. In many ways, Frederick the Great was his philosophical and aesthetic antipode. That these two — a humble, deeply religious composer and a flamboyant militant monarch — would meet, was itself an unpredictable twist of fate. This meeting was less a clash of two personalities as it was a clash of two eras or two worlds. And from this battlefield of wills emerged a remarkable collection of works known as the “Musical Offering.” Presented by the Framingham Public Library. LOCATION: Callahan Center, 535 Union Ave.
