FRAMINGHAM, MA – Today, Jack, Eric and Sam Hendler, co-founders and owners of Jack’s Abby Brewing, announced plans to build a significantly larger brewery at 100 Clinton Street, occupying part of the former Dennison Mfg. complex in downtown Framingham.

The expansion will allow the brewery to increase production capacity, warranted by a rise in demand for the beer in its home state, as well as expanded territories such as Connecticut, upstate NY and Vermont only a few short years after the brewery’s August 2011 official grand opening.

The new 67,000 sq. foot space (up from the current brewery’s 12,000) will feature state-of-the-art brewing equipment including a canning line and a 60 bbl brew house for initial brewing capacity of 50,000 bbls annually, with opportunity to scale up to 125,000 bbls.

Framingham, MA – Jack’s Abby Brewing, the family-owned craft brewery with the mission of creating truly distinctive lagers, is pleased to announce this fall’s lineup of seasonal and specialty brews. The brewery will also induct Leisure Time Lager as core brand this fall; due to this wheat lager’s popularity as the summer seasonal, Leisure Time will now be featured year-round.

“We always look forward to this time of year because of the wide variety of lagers we feature—from extra hoppy to intensely maltty brews,” says Jack Hendler, co-founder and Head Brewer.  “Not only are we able to include more locally sourced ingredients from New England in the Fall, but we are able to harvest local hops and pumpkins, involving us in each step of the brewing process.” Each of the seasonal and specialty lagers continue the Jack’s Abby traditions of featuring locally-grown ingredients, traditional German brewing standards and American innovation.

The 2014 Fall Specialty and Seasonal Lager Line-up includes:

    • Leisure Time Lager: Now available year-round, this lager is brewed with wheat and a blend of spices including lemongrass, coriander, orange peel and chamomile. A subtle spiciness balances the citrusy and floral hops added to the whirl and hopback.  Year-round release.  ABV 4.8%, IBUs 15.
    • Copper Legend – This Octoberfest-style lager is malty, smooth and exceedingly drinkable — perfect to celebrate the change in seasons. This beer features locally grown wheat from MA, Munich malt and noble hops.   September release.  ABV 5.7%, IBUs 22.

“The Bone” is Closed until after Labor Day.

FRAMINGHAM, MA – The Chicken Bone Saloon sent out a notice to customers on their email list informing them they would be closing for the entire summer, beginning June 17th, 2014 and not reopening until “the week after Labor Day”.

    The notice read —

Dear Friends of The Chicken Bone:

Summertime has always been a very slow time of year for us here at The Chicken Bone. Many people are away on vacation and/or enjoying outdoor activities. This, combined with recent changes in the economy and rising cost of living expenses, means we all have less money to spend on eating out and entertainment.

Up until last year, The Chicken Bone had always been open 7 days a week. Last summer, in an effort to minimize the impact of the slow season, we reduced our operating hours and decided to be closed on Mondays. We have made the difficult decision to suspend our operations for the entire summer this year, and then re-open after Labor Day.

We want to thank all of our staff and all of our customers for your friendship and support over the years. We know that The Chicken Bone would not be the special place that it is without all of you. We hope that you enjoy the summer and come back to see us in the fall for the great food and live music that The Chicken Bone is known for.

    Sincerely,
    Bill & John
The Chicken Bone will be closed from Tuesday June 17th until the week after Labor Day.

Rep. Tom Sannicandro Files Bottled Water Bill

    MA Rep. Tom Sannicandro, (D-Ashland)
    MA Rep. Tom Sannicandro, (D-Ashland)

FRAMINGHAM, MA – Massachusetts State Rep. Tom Sannicandro (D-Ashland) filed a bill Friday that would prohibit the use of public funds to purchase bottled water, a bill that would reduce waste, energy use, and costs.

“There is no reason we should spend taxpayers’ money on a product that is unnecessary, expensive and harmful to the environment when there are clean and cheap alternatives”, Representative Sannicandro said. “It is important that we lead by example and do our part to reduce bottle waste and save the Commonwealth money.”

In December, the MetroWest Daily News ran a story about how the state had expended $300,000 in half the fiscal year on bottled water to staff events and meetings, often at buildings that have clean drinking water available.

“Not only is state spending on bottled water wasteful at a time when our state can ill afford unnecessary expenses, it broadcasts the absolute wrong message about the value, quality and importance of our public water systems,” said Kristin Urquiza, a spokesperson for Corporate Accountability International.

While tap water could cost pennies for a gallon, bottled water could be between 250 and 10,000 times more expensive.[2] And compared to a liter of tap water, a liter of bottled water requires as much as 2,000 times as much energy, according to one study. That study also found that bottled water consumption in America alone sucked up between 32 and 54 million barrels of oil last year.

This bill would recommit state agencies to use our public water supplies. Rep. Sannicandro believes it makes no economical or environmental sense for Mass Water Resource Authorities to host meetings with bottled water on the table when reservoirs connected to state of the art water purification systems sit directly behind those buildings.

This bill does not affect Massachusetts residents’ ability to purchase bottled water.
