  • Spilka has more than a moment for Seniors

Hardworking State Senator Karen Spilka sponsored her annual Senior Health and Wellness Fair at Callahan today.

A complimentary chair massage by Buffy Cove was just the thing for my stiff neck.  Other than my neck, the other screenings showed I’m in good health.

I was able to pick up information to share with my parents and to educate myself about what is available for families dealing with Alzheimer’s as well as sorting out Medicare coverage.

  • Soothing Savings

I don’t sign up for that many store mailing lists, but  have saved quite a bit by signing up for the Bath and Body Works list.

Last week while walking in the Natick (Mall) Collection, I was lured into the Bath and Body Works shop by the “Buy 3, get 3 Free” sign.  I remembered that I had a couple of coupons in my wallet, too.

While stores don’t necessarily let you combine offers, I was able to buy 6 items for the price of 3, plus they accepted both my $ 10 off coupon and a coupon for a free room freshener (value $ 5.)

I felt a little like that woman in the IKEA commercial who rushes out of the store yelling to her husband to “Start the car!”  because she paid so little that she felt she was stealing and there must be some mistake and she wanted to leave before they stopped her.

  • CELEBRATE BABES, BOYS AND BOTOX

FRAMINGHAM, MA – At 2 p.m. on November 8, the acclaimed Four Bitchin’ Babes®) will perform their hilarious Hormonal Imbalance,™ A Mood Swinging Musical Revue at Framingham High School to benefit two local non-profits — Hope In Bloom and The Vernon Cancer Center. WCVB TV news anchor, Susan Wornick along with breast cancer survivor and WCVB TV reporter Kelley Tuthill will emcee the laugh filled afternoon.

When 49 year old Framingham resident, Kimm Delgizzi, was diagnosed with breast cancer, her longtime friends Dale Gudejko and Anne Blackington sprang into action. To cheer Delgizzi up and help her heal, they organized the Four Bitchin’ Babes® appearance in her honor.

Delgizzi chose Dedham based Hope in Bloom, which plants gardens free of charge at the homes of breast cancer patients and The Vernon Cancer Center, where Delgizzi received her care, as the recipients of proceeds from the event.

  • Pumpkins Away!

One of the great things about Framingham is that you can get to lots of fun places on less than a tank of gas.

This weekend we headed up to Greenfield New Hampshire to see pumpkins thrown by a trebuchet (a super-sized catapolt.)  A farmer, inspired by a program on PBS about these medieval war weapons, built a trebuchet and has been demonstrating it on weekends by launching pumpkins over 1000 feet.

Inspired by the Medieval war machine, he also built a mock castle, a huge spiked mace, and created a moat like pond across the street from his farm stand.  A snack stand is housed in a turret like hut.

It’s charming and awesome, and free to wander and watch the demonstrations.  While there is a donation bowl, there is no charge.

The farm stand is modest and fairly priced and we bought some of the best and largest apples that we have enjoyed in a long time.   It was a fun day away for very little and a different kind of destination for a family adventure.

The trebuchet is named “The Yankee Siege” and the owners have entered in in “pumpkin chuckin” contests and have vanquished all comers.

There’s one more weekend to enjoy the demonstrations.  The farm stand and fantasy castle land are located on Route 31 in Greenfield, NH.  To learn more, visit www.yankeesiege.com.

  • Boo-Hoo Flu

Framingham offered free flu shots today at Framingham High and McCarthy Elementary.

Unfortunately, due to family responsibilities, we couldn’t break away to go get a shot until about 1:15 p.m.  The clinics must have been well attended because by the time we arrived at the schools, both clinics were closed.

We feel “boo-hoo” about it, we hope it doesn’t turn to “ah-choo” before the next flu clinics.  At least there are more to come and our doctor isn’t offering them this year.

Framingham High School Band Scarf Fundraiser

Among the booths at Pies on the Common on Saturday was the booth of Framingham High Band members selling scarfs for $ 20 as a fundraiser.  Some of the band members were playing snippets of tunes to entertain passersby.

The scarfs are blue and white and say “Framingham Flyers” on them.  A good item to sell on what was a clear, but unusually cold October day.

  • Styrofoam Recycling Event Sat. October 24th

FRAMINGHAM, MA – Many don’t realize that styrofoam never decomposes, (it never “breaks down” into organic material), like some other trash. Styrofoam remains in landfills forever. This effects us all personally as costs of products and services increase due to the increased cost of finding ways and places to dispose of garbage.

Framingham does not currently accept Styrofoam in its recycling program, but some companies are finding ways to give old Styrofoam new life in new uses.

Grace Congregational UCC church in conjunction with ReFoamit, LLC, is sponsoring a Styrofoam collection Day on Saturday, October 24 from 9Am to 4PM. Please collect and donate your clean (washed) styrofoam products including: takeout containers, packing pellets, coffee cups, disposable plates, inserts from large packages. (Please remove all tape from the Styrofoam)

There will be refreshments, prizes, gifts and environmental information at this free event. Parents and children are encouraged to participate in the “kids corner” activities and come away with their own original creations.

Grace Congregational UCC Church is at 76 Salem End Road between Rt. 9 (High St.) and Winter St. near Framingham State College.

For more information go to www.gracechurchucc.org or call 508-872-3342.
