  • Nobscot Gallery in Annie’s Book Stop Features Student Art

    FRAMINGHAM, MA — Nobscot Gallery, bookstore and coffee shop in Nobscot Plaza on Water St. hosts an exhibit of Hemenway students’ artwork beginning on June 8th, 2008.

    The Hemenway School Parent’s & Children’s Art Exhibition is organized by parents Patty Hebert and Brenda Dostie. The exhibition will celebrate and share the talents of the Hemenway community of parents and students. Exhibits are expected to include paintings, pottery, photography, quilting and jewelry.

    Local writer and parent Patty Hebert commented: “I have always enjoyed the monthly exhibits at the Nobscot Gallery, and this one will be particularly delightful as it showcases the art of our school community.

    A grand opening reception will be held on Sunday, June 8th, from 2 – 5 p.m. at the Nobscot gallery in Annie’s Book Stop. The reception will also feature music and other performance art from children whose talents are more active than static!

    The reception will be a fund raiser, and grilled food has been generously donated by Wanda’s Food and Catering. All proceeds will be donated to the Hemenway School PTO art program.

    Organiser Brenda Dostie commented: “We just want to celebrate the joy and enthusiasm of our children expressed through art. Events like this are important in bringing together our community.”

  • Framingham Farmers Markets Opening Soon

    FRAMINGHAM, MA – The Framingham Farmer’s Markets are opening on June 12 and 14, 2008. The Thursday market returns to the Framingham Centre Common (aka Village Green) on Thursday, June 12. Hours are 12:30 – 5:30 p.m.. The market will run through October 30th.

    The southside market returns to St. Tarcisius’ parking lot on Waverley St. (Rt. 135) on Saturday June 14th. This market runs on Wednesdays from 3 – 6 p.m. and Saturdays’ from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. This market will run through October 25th.

  • Call for Volunteers for Framingham Emergency Reserve Corps

    FRAMINGHAM, MA — Volunteers are needed to develop, practice and deploy aid in an emergency response to a town-wide event.

    The Framingham Emergency Reserve Corps (FERC) is a group of volunteers who assist the town in its emergency planning and help protect the health of the community. Members are local residents of different ages and abilities. No medical back-ground is necessary!

    In the event of disasters, either natural or man-made, FERC volunteers supplement trained emergency personnel, thereby providing a boost in public health resources.FERC members:

    Receive FREE emergency trainings.

    Staff town flu clinics.

    Provide emergency preparedness education to the public.

    Interested in Joining? Please come to a meeting on June 12, 2008 at 6:00 PM at the Memorial Building in Nevins Hall.

  • Celebrate Framingham Free Family Fun Sunday June 1, 2008

    FRAMINGHAM, MA — Don’t miss the first Celebrate Framingham Day in Downtown Framingham this Sunday, June 1st from 1 – 5 p.m. From music to moonwalks, horses to Army hummers, there will be lots of things to see and do for people of all ages and interests.

    The event will take place in the heart of Downtown Framingham, from the Danforth Museum and the Civic League to Downtown Common and the Fabric Place. Bands will play at the Memorial Building. The Lancers, the Ceremonial Cavalry trop of the Massachusetts Militia will appear. There will be a 3 lane bungee challenge and chalk drawing competition as well as a 60 foot monkey rope bridge constructed by the Boy Scouts.

    The Oldies 103 Radio Wagon will be on hand as a series of performances are presented at the Civic League Auditorium. Framingham Park & Rec will offer a Basketball power shooting contest at Danforth Gym while there will be a Kids Bicycle Rodeo at the Fabric Place Parking lot.

    Celebrate Framingham is a project of this year’s class of the Leadership MetroWest Academy. The event is designed to bring families downtown to experience the unique shops and restaurants the downtown district has to offer.

    Several town agencies and organizations are participating in this event, including Park and Recreation, Public Works, Fire, Police, Information Technology, Building Services, Framingham Library, Danforth Art Museum, Danforth Gym, Framingham Historical Society, Framingham Civic League , and many more. This event is rain or shine. In case of rain, outdoor activities will be moved indoors to the Memorial Building.

    Event Coordinator Needed at Callahan Center

    The Center is looking for an Event Coordinator to arrange and travel on all the day trips that the senior population requests and enjoys, both local and out-of-town.

    The Event Coordinator will work with travel consultants to make the arrangements and to review their itinerary as presented. Negotiates both cost of trip and cost of bus transportation with transportation company for each senior event.

    The Event Coordinator works directly with restaurants and facilities to provide a safe environment and safe travel for our seniors. This is a part-time position with varied days/hours, and it is a grant-funded position for one year. Travel experience necessary, must have car and MA license.

    Employee must be capable of operating miscellaneous tools and office equipment relative to this position which shall include, but may not be limited to: computers, copiers, fax machines, and calculators. Time spent standing, walking, and sitting. Lifting, pushing/pulling, or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds with occasionally a maximum of 40 pounds. Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, and bending. Repetitive movements of the hands. Communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing.

    Attention Seniors! Have you suffered a stroke? Have you been diagnosed with Parkinson’s? Is your balance compromised so that you and/or your loved ones fear you walking alone? We are offering a special program just for you! A small group of 4 or 5 people that want to learn about balance, about connecting your brain to your body parts, about how to reduce your risk of falling. The program will consist of education, breathing exercises, and the use of some Tai Chi movements to increase your balance in a slow easy way. Knowing that this will be a journey, not a lightening fast solution, but a solution you can achieve with slow comfortable movements. How could you go wrong? The SHINE Program (Serving the Health Information Needs of Elders) provides free, confidential health care information, assistance and counseling to elders and other Medicare beneficiaries. Call your local Senior Center for a SHINE appointment.

    The SHINE Program can provide information and assistance to help you access your prescription benefits. Call your local Senior Center for a SHINE appointment.

    At MassMedLine, a trained staff of pharmacy professionals will answer your questions about your prescription medicines over the phone (866-633-1617 toll free). They have information about prescription drug programs. For online information, visit the website at www.massmedline.com.

    Quality of Care Complaints:

    MassPRO (Massachusetts Peer Review Organization) is an organization of doctors and nurses who contract with Medicare to review hospital discharge decisions. If a Medicare beneficiary feels that he/she is not ready for discharge, he/she should call MassPRO at 800-252-5533.

    Medicare Rights:

    MAP (Medicare Advocacy Project) provides advice and free legal representation to Massachusetts elders and persons with disabilities, whether they are enrolled in traditional Medicare or in a Medicare Advantage Plan. Call MAP at 800-323-3205 for help in protecting your Medicare rights.

    If you need help with any aspect of your Medicare, call your local Senior Center and ask for a SHINE appointment. You can reach a SHINE Counselor at 781-453-8076. If you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name and number. A counselor will return your call as soon as possible.

    Dry Eyes and Treatment Options: On June 23rd at 10am, Dr. Jody Judge of the Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston will be at the Callahan Center conducting a presentation on making the diagnosis of dry eyes and the treatment options.     Thursday, June 5th at 10 am at Callahan Center Professor Marc Widershien presents “New England in Words and Music” – In 2001 he created a program called “New England in Words and Music” – from the Victrola era to the present. Professor Marc Widershien loves to tell stories and give background to the music he performs. His work is participatory, often inviting his audiences to tell their stories and request favorite music. This performance will consist of Marc playing the violin and internationally renowned composer, conductor and pianist, Herman Weiss, playing piano.     On Thursday, June 12th, we will again celebrate our friendship with the Brophy Elementary School. Twenty-one students will arrive at 10:45 am for a morning of “Bingo with the Seniors” and a pizza lunch.     Lawn Chair Drill Team – Dick Bonvini is looking for volunteers for his lawn chair drill team for the Flag Day and Fourth of July parades. It has been very successful in the past and is also a fun thing to do. It involves being able to walk one mile.     PROPERTY TAX RELIEF PROGRAM – The Property Tax Relief Program will open registration in the month of August. If you qualify for this program, you may work for a town department to get a discount on your property taxes. Check the August Courier for the dates to come to the Center to see if you qualify for this worthwhile tax relief program for seniors. Please do not call now. No appointments will be made until August.


    Framingham Water & Sewer Commission FY09 Senior Discount Program – The Callahan Center now has applications for the Fiscal 2009 Water/Sewer Senior Discount. Eligibility requirements are as follows: Must be Framingham resident 65 years of age or over, Must be owner occupied for one, two and three family home, Gross income may not exceed: $45,000 for an individual, 2) $56,000 for head of household, 3) $67,000 for married filing jointly. A proof of ownership of property, such as a copy of the real estate tax bill with the owner (s) name must be provided. Also, new applicants must supply one of the following: a certified copy of the applicant’s birth certificate, photocopy of their driver’s license or passport.

    FRAMINGHAM, MA — The Massachusetts Department of Corrections is looking for teachers to volunteer to meet with mothers at MCI-Framingham about their children and the importance of education in their lives.

    MCI-Framingham is a medium security correctional facility for female offenders, located in Framingham, Massachusetts. It is noted as the oldest female correctional institution in operation in the United States. In addition to meeting the security needs of a medium security facility, MCI-Framingham provides numerous program and treatment opportunities including mental health, medical, substance abuse, and family services, as well as educational, vocational, library, religious, recreational, and community service programs.

  • Patriotic Event in Honor of our Veterans

    FRAMINGHAM, MA — A bus trip to Bourne National Cemetery sponsored by Framingham Lodge No 1264 B.P.O ELKS is planned for Sunday May 25th, 2008.

    The schedule is as follows:

    • 10:30 AM Bus leaves ELKS parking lot, 450 Union Ave, Framingham
    • 1:00 PM Memorial Day Ceremony Maritime Band & Wreath placement
    • 4:00 PM Cook out at the Framingham Lodge

    The cost for this event is $15, which includes transportation – Deluxe Ritche Bus, box lunch and cookout.

    First come, first serve, space is limited to 52 seats.

    FRAMINGHAM, MA — The Town of Framingham’s 2008 Hazardous Waste Day is Saturday, May 10. Time is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Location is the McCarthy School Parking Lot on Flagg Drive.

    This is for Framingham residents only. Proof of residency is required and photo ID. No commercial waste. Reduce long waits by combining waste with your neighbors and car pool.

    Accepted: pesticides, herbicides, bug sprays, rodent poisons, paint thinner, urethans, oil or enamel paints, lead based paints, pool & spa chemicals, concentrated fertilizers, cleaning solvents, caustic cleaners, degreaser, photo chemicals, old gasoline/kerosene, diesel oil, aerosol cans containing paint, mercury-containing devices.

    Do not bring: radioactive waste, explosives, gunpowder, flares, ammunition, PCB oils, bulk chemicals/oil, asbestos, medical/biochemical waste or latex paint.
