    FRAMINGHAM, MA – The following information is about activities and services at the Callahan Senior Center for the month of March, 2011.

    NOTICE: Most of the activities, special programs and events listed below require signing up or advance reservation, (unless otherwise noted). Please do so in advance so activities can be scheduled effectively and in the appropriate space.

    The Foster Children’s Project, Thursday, February 10th, 2011 from 9:30—11:15 am, Students and five teachers from the Fuller Middle School will pack 40 bags of small items for local foster children.

    The Friends of Callahan will hold their next meeting on Monday, March 14th, 2011 at 1:30 pm at the Callahan Center. Entertainment will be provided by Matt McCabe on Piano with Vocalist. Refreshments will be served.

    Tuesday and It Must Be Movie Time!…and Pizza Time! All for only $3.00!!!!!

    Due to the early start times, and so pizza for lunch can be ordered, you must sign up to attend at 508-532-5980, by March 4th for “Gone with the Wind” and by March 18th for “Gettysburg”.

    When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” – Thursday, March 17th, 2011 at 10:15 am. Traditional ballards, jigs, reels and good old-fashioned drinking songs. Following this performance at 11:30 am, there will be a Corned Beef and Cabbage luncheon catered by Mark’s Creative Catering. After lunch the Irish Step Dancers will perform. The fee for this program is $15.00 per person. Pre-payment is required and you do not have a reservation until we receive your payment. You must sign up and pay before March 11th. No admittance without a reservation.

    Self -Defense Course: Monday March 21st from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Dolores Coots and Debi Nau of the Framingham Police Department will be at Callahan to provide a self-defense course for seniors.

    Callahan’s Book Club: Thursday, March 24th at 1:00 pm. Jane Peck from the Framingham Public Library will be leading the discussion of Framingham Reads Together – The Killer Angels (1974).

    Acrylic Painting Classes: Starting Thursday, March 31st from 10:00-11:30 am and continuing for 7 weeks. The cost is $55.

    INTERESTED AND INTERESTING PEOPLE WANTED!!

    Does anyone have any Civil War memorabilia they would be willing to have on display at Callahan?

    Our Weight Management Support Group is looking for new members. They meet on Wednesdays at 11:30.

    Anyone interested in Board Games? How about learning a new game or playing an old favorite-Checkers or Chess? Strategic moves on a game board are good for our brain health. We have someone who would be interested in organizing groups on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00-4:00 pm.

    Water Aerobics …..Think Spring? If anyone is interested in a second class this spring at Suburban Athletic Center, please call Deb at 508-532-5980 x4110. This is one type of low impact exercise that can be a lot of fun, a good place to meet people, and help keep your muscles active. Since most people get a kick out of going to the pool, water aerobics are an easy way to get someone excited about working out.

    Sudoku? We are still trying to get a group going for the Spring. Please call if you would be interested in learning the skills involved in this pencil and paper game that is all the current rage!

    Writing Class? – Is anyone interested in a class that will teach you memoir and journal writing skills and techniques? Perhaps writing short stories or the Great American novel?

    FRAMINGHAM, MA – A legal notice issued by the MA Dept. of Transportation indicates that Framingham Building Inspector Michael F. Foley, has requested the Massachusetts Department of Transportation conduct a hearing to determine whether a building permit shall be issued to the Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center, Inc., (formerly Great Brook Valley Health Center), for construction of an addition to an existing office building located at 354 Waverly Street in Framingham.

    FRAMINGHAM, MA – The Framingham Veteran’s Council has put together a window display commemorating the 20th Anniversary of Operation Desert Storm.

    The display is installed at the Framingham Public Library, 49 Lexington St., Downtown Framingham and runs from February 1, 2011 through February 14, 2011.

    Items on display include different types of US camouflage, an Escape and Evasion map carried by Special Forces and Pilots for use behind enemy lines. A “Blood Chit” help in evasion.

    There are propaganda leaflets and postcards. The most famous propaganda post card was the Kuwaiti Valentine. These were printed by the Kuwaiti government in exile and sent to refugee camps where they were “personalized” to then be handed out to the US Troops.

    There is a postcard signed by Bob Hope the comedian, Generals Colin Powell, Chairman Joint Chief of Staff, H. Norman Schwarzkopf, (more…)

    The Main Library Book Club meeting that was scheduled for this evening (2/1/11) has been cancelled and re-scheduled for Thursday, February 3rd at 7 p.m. in the Costin room. The book being discussed is “Cutting For Stone.”

    (Library) The presentation by James Coleman, President and CEO of the American Textile Museum, scheduled for Wednesday evening, February 2nd has been canceled and re-scheduled for next Tuesday evening, February 8th at 7 p.m. in the Costin room.

    Feb 2nd Immunization Clinic POSTPONED and is Rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 8th at Keefe Tech HS from 3 pm to 7 pm.  We still have more flu season to get through. Flu has not yet peaked in Massachusetts. There is still time to get your flu vaccine. The Framingham Board of Health and Medical Reserve Corps volunteers are holding a FREE PUBLIC IMMUNIZATION CLINIC on Tuesday February 8th, 2011 at Keefe Vocational Technical High School, 750 Winter Street Framingham, from 3-7 pm. This clinic is open to ALL residents of Massachusetts ages 6 months and up. This clinic will offer this year’s influenza vaccine, the pneumonia vaccine, and the Tetanus/Pertussis vaccine (tetanus and whooping cough) while supplies last.     FRAMINGHAM, MA – Candidates for the upcoming 2011 Framingham Annual Town Election are invited to submit position papers including a brief bio and other info related to their candidacy which will be published in a special Election 2011 section of this website.

    While many candidates could write a short novel about any single issue they are passionate about, we are asking that “positions” be simply stated, e.g.- “For city form of government“, “Against legalized hemp production“, “For removing dams and letting Sudbury River clean itself“, etc.

    The Framingham Planning Board is running an online "Master Plan Survey".

    FRAMINGHAM, MA – The Town of Framingham Planning Board has been working on updating the Town’s Master Plan for nearly a year.

    The Master Plan is laid out on a map which takes into account local long range planning efforts, (and is influenced by initiatives undertaken by State and regional planners).

    After reviewing the Town’s Master Plan last summer, the Planning Board hosted a series of public forums;  an  “Open Space, Conservation and Recreation” forum, one regarding Economic Development and others to get input from individual neighborhoods.

    In November (2010) a draft of an updated Master Plan was drawn based on that input along with past planning initiatives, current land use, proposed and in-progress capital (more…)
