    FRAMINGHAM, MA – Discover Saxonville’s Athenaeum! The Athenaeum is getting a little help from its “Friends”.

    Join The Friends of Saxonville for community, culture and cuisine — a reception and concert to benefit the Restoration of The Athenaeum Community Hall at 7:00pm on Saturday evening October 5th, 2013

    Although the exterior of Athenaeum has been restored, the interior is in complete disrepair. Our event goal is to raise $10,000 to help with construction costs, provide furnishings and accessories, (i.e. media equipment and kitchen necessities), and provide operating expense support.

    Event Highlights include delectable Hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar of fine wine and beer, a brief review of the planned restoration of The Athenaeum Community Hall, a concert of Baroque Period selections for Harpsichord and Flute by The Hunt Trio and the event is topped off with decadent desserts, coffee and tea.

    FRAMINGHAM, MA – Before Framingham had the Pearl St. Cupboard & Cafe, (a food pantry which opened in the former DMV Office in Downtown Framingham), many hungry Framingham residents already had a place to turnliterally

    Even today, Joanne Barry, Executive Director of “A Place To Turn“, an emergency food pantry in Natick tells us, “our food pantry serves those in need in Metrowest, with close to 70% being Framingham residents.”

    Barry is reaching out to those in Framingham to participate in the 2nd Annual Ride for Food— a bike ride to help raise money for (more…)

  • Framingham Students Awarded 2013-2014 IAFSA Scholarships

    FRAMINGHAM, MA – The Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni, (IAFSA), is pleased to announce its 2013-2014 scholarship winners.

    This year IAFSA is granting awards to a record 62 Framingham State University students. Scholarships range from $250 to $2,500. Recipients were chosen based upon their area of study, academic achievement, financial need, hometown, and campus involvement.

    FRAMINGHAM, MA – On Monday, July 1st, 2013, Karen Spilka launched her congressional campaign in front of over 200 supporters who braved the weather and the heat to show their support for her run for U.S. Congress.

    There’s lots to do at Cochituate State Park!

    FRAMINGHAM, MA – Between the towns of Framingham, Wayland and Natick, MA, Lake Cochituate offer many recreational summer activities including swimming, boating and fishing.

    Many locals may not realize that just a few hundred yards east of the Framingham/Natick town line, (on Rt. 30), the beach, picnic area, boat launch, snack bar and canoe rental shop are in “Cochituate State Park”, which is part of the Massachusetts State Park system and operated by the MA Dept. of Conservation and Recreation, (“DCR”).

    Throughout the months of July and August, (Tuesdays-Saturdays), the park provides fun, educational, and FREE summer activities for kids and families!

    In cooperation with the USDA Summer Food Service Program, The United Way of Tri-County will be providing free lunches to children throughout summer vacation.

    The Town of Framingham’s Department of Public Works, Highway Division and Capital Projects offers residents and visitors to Framingham helpful information about current and upcoming construction projects.

    FRAMINGHAM, MA — MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard A. Davey, Highway Administrator Frank DePaola, Representative Chris Walsh, and other elected officials today attended the dedication of the Route 9 Bridge over the Sudbury River in Framingham for Greg Vilidnitsky.

    A MassDOT Engineer, Vilidnitsky was struck and killed on Sept. 14, 2010, while working on Route 9 in Framingham.

  • Robots, Geek Art, Tech Toys and other Summer Fun

    FRAMINGHAM, MA – When someone mentions “STEM”, (Science Technology Engineering and Math), a lot of kids groan and think of homework and testing — but MassBay Community College is offering something different this summer — they’re gonna’ teach high school kids how to build robots, do projects in engineering, computer programming, smartphone application, (“app”), programming,  3-D computer modeling, interactive multimedia, race robots, do art with robots — oh, and did I mention ROBOTS!

    Better still — this is a low cost, 2-week summer program for high school kids, (and there are ROBOTS involved!)

    While many summer programs can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a week of “fun”, since this program is mostly grant funded, the cost for 2-weeks is only $100 per student — end not only does it sound like fun, it’s educational!

    If you’re a Framingham high school student looking for something new and challenging to do this summer should consider taking these courses or workshops, ()

    The 2-week program runs July 8th through July 19th, 2013 , (for a total of 10 weekdays — Mon-Fri, 9:00am ’til 3:30pm).

    STEM Summer Bridge 2013 Options:

    There are three options students can choose from.

    The first two are 10-day “for credit / transferable” courses and are being offered only to students who will entering their junior or senior year this fall/

    Credit Courses:

    MN130 – Engineering Designs Come to Life with 3-D Technology – a 10 day, hands-on, project based, intensive engineering design course.

    CS140 – interactive multimedia to Create Animation – a 10-day intensive, hands-on, project based, interactive multimedia course.

    Workshops:

    Spend the 10-days spread out into (4) 2.5 day, fun, creative, educational, workshops. (workshops are open to all high school students and do not earn college credit)

    • ArtBotics –  (art + robotics), build a flower or a toy and make it move!
    • Robots! – Lego Mindstorm Competion: Race To The Finish!
    • AppInventor – mobile app programming for Android based phones.
    • Scratch – programming, games, storytelling.

    Programs are in association with the U.S.  National Science Foundation, (www.nsf.gov), AMP it Up! Advanced Manufacturing Program of MA, (www.ampitupma.com), BATEC – Broadening Advanced Technological Education Connections / National Center of Excellence for Computing and Information Technologies, (www.batec.org‎), and Northeastern University, (www.northeastern.edu)

    Executive Director of Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni Retiring After 25 Years of Service

    FRAMINGHAM, MA – Framingham resident, Marilyn Manzella, Executive Director of the Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni (IAFSA), is retiring after 25 years of service.

    IAFSA is a self-governing, non-profit organization established in 1874 by dedicated Framingham State alumni.

    Manzella, Class of 1969, joined the staff in 1988 and became Executive Director in 2004.

    IAFSA administers funds that provide scholarships for Framingham State students and benevolent assistance for alumni while maintaining the Alumni House for member and community functions. Funding is provided by donations and bequests from alumni and friends. During the 2012-2013 school year, a record 58 students received IAFSA scholarships and awards and eight students received interest-free loans.

    At the 2013 Annual Meeting, IAFSA President Kelly Raymond announced that, after 25 years of service, (more…)
