FRAMINGHAM, MA – Today, Jack, Eric and Sam Hendler, co-founders and owners of Jack’s Abby Brewing, announced plans to build a significantly larger brewery at 100 Clinton Street, occupying part of the former Dennison Mfg. complex in downtown Framingham.
The expansion will allow the brewery to increase production capacity, warranted by a rise in demand for the beer in its home state, as well as expanded territories such as Connecticut, upstate NY and Vermont only a few short years after the brewery’s August 2011 official grand opening.
The new 67,000 sq. foot space (up from the current brewery’s 12,000) will feature state-of-the-art brewing equipment including a canning line and a 60 bbl brew house for initial brewing capacity of 50,000 bbls annually, with opportunity to scale up to 125,000 bbls.
“We’ve developed a great relationship with the town of Framingham over the past three years and couldn’t be happier that we found a location for the brewery that meets (more…)
Melvin “Dr. Mel” Ehrlich, sentenced to one year in jail.
FRAMINGHAM, MA – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced today that a former pediatric dentist with an office in Framingham has been sentenced after pleading guilty to five indictments charging him with possession and distribution of child pornography for images allegedly found on his laptop computer.
On December 18, Melvin A. Ehrlich, 52, of Millis, pleaded guilty to charges of distribution of visual material showing a child in a state of nudity or sexual conduct (2 counts), and possession of child pornography (3 counts). Middlesex Superior Court Judge Mitchell H. Kaplan sentenced Ehrlich to one year in the Middlesex County House of Correction in Billerica and three years’ probation. The District Attorney’s office had requested two to three years in state prison and five years’ probation. Judge Kaplan stayed the sentence until December 29.
“It was disturbing to find out that someone who had been a trusted medical professional was involved in child pornography,” said District Attorney Ryan. “It’s frightening to think about the number of times people brought their children to Ehrlich’s dental practice having no idea that in his down time he was looking at disturbing and graphic images of other young people who were being exploited. This case is a reminder that those who engage in child pornography may be in any profession, of any age, and of any educational level.”
According to authorities, in the spring of 2013, Ehrlich made arrangements to have his personal laptop computer picked up at his dental office by a Framingham business for maintenance work to remove a reported virus from the computer. While working on Ehrlich’s laptop, a technician observed downloaded images of child pornography. The business called Framingham Police, who immediately launched an investigation.
On April 11, 2013, Ehrlich was arraigned on charges related to child pornography in Framingham District Court. An extensive forensic investigation was conducted and revealed that Ehrlich used this personal laptop computer under various user names to download and distribute commercially traded child pornography images. The data recovered was sent to and confirmed to be commercially traded child pornography by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
At the time of this incident, Ehrlich was a pediatric dentist who operated a business called Wee Care for Kids in Framingham. The investigation did not reveal any evidence that Ehrlich abused any of his patients or manufactured any images of child pornography. Ehrlich is no longer employed as a pediatric dentist.
The prosecutor assigned to this case is Assistant District Attorney Kristin Noto of the Special Investigations Unit of the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. The case was investigated by Framingham Police, Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the Child Protection and Cyber Protection Units within the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, and the U.S. Marshal’s Service.

Local Golf Tournament Raises College Scholarship Dollars; Helps Defray Costs to Allow More Youths to Play Hockey
The proceeds of the golf tournament are used to award up to five scholarships to High School seniors who will be attending college or prep school in the coming year and have played as members of the Framingham Youth Hockey Program for at least three seasons. Dollars raised also go towards deferring the cost of playing hockey for Framingham Jr. Flyers players.
“Families are struggling with the increasing costs of college – this is one small way we can give back to the community and help out children and their families,” said Bob Lewis, President of Framingham Youth Hockey. “Hockey can be an expensive sport – equipment and ice time. We don’t want kids that want to play this exciting sport unable to do so because of the cost. The dollars raised from this event are pumped right back into defraying the cost of ice time and making it easier for families to afford.”
To date, more than 50 college scholarships have been awarded. More than 500 boys and girls are a part of Framingham Youth Hockey. “Hockey is a sport that teaches commitment, sportsmanship, being a team player – these are lessons that last a lifetime and the more kids that have that opportunity the better off we are as a community,” added Lewis.
For those interested in playing, the cost is $185 per player which includes lunch, golf, golf cart and dinner. Dinner only tickets are available for $50 per person. To purchase tickets or submit questions please contact Scott Penrod, Don Trischitta or Dianne Tersoni at fyhgolf@gmail.com
Logo of the newly established Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women, (Oct. 2, 2014)FRAMINGHAM, MA – Governor Deval Patrick recently signed legislation establishing the MetroWest Commission on the Status of Women. The legislation was filed by Senator Karen Spilka at the request of women in the MetroWest area and organized by the United Way of Tri-County.
The MetroWest Commission on the Status of Women will consist of nine commissioners appointed by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women who will represent the strength and diversity of the region in regard to geography, age, professional background and personal experience. The commissioners will share a common commitment to the improvement of the status of women in the MetroWest area.
Victoria A. Budson, chair of the MCSW, stated: “The newly formed commission will provide insight to identify the challenges and opportunities for women of the Metrowest region with the goal of improving the lives of women, their families, and communities. I am confident the commissioners appointed to serve on the Metrowest Commission on the Status of Women, each with her own skills and base of knowledge, will be able to move us toward this goal.”
Per its enabling legislation, the Commission will be charged with conducting an ongoing study of matters concerning women within the MetroWest area. The Commission is mandated to report its findings to the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women annually and to recommend solutions to the challenges facing the women and girls of the MetroWest area.
“This commission will amplify the voices of women and girls in the MetroWest region and identify specific ways to advance women’s rights here and across the state,” Senator Karen Spilka (D-Ashland) said. “We are promoting equality and opportunity for all women in our communities and helping to inspire the next generation of female leaders in the Commonwealth.”
There are currently five women’s regional commissions across Massachusetts, which include, Berkshire County, Bristol County, Cape Cod and the Islands, Essex County, and Worcester County. Additionally, there are nine independently-functioning municipal commissions across the Commonwealth with which the MCSW and regional commissions maintain a working relationship.
The creation of the MetroWest Commission on the Status of Women augments these well-established commissions and broadens the reach and scope of organizations committed to improving women’s access to opportunities, rights, and equality in all areas of life. “Building a better community for women in MetroWest begins with understanding the issues facing women in our region,” said Jen Maseda, Senior Vice President of United Way of Tri-County. “Greater women’s representation and involvement in advisory commissions like the newly established MetroWest Commission, corresponds with a more equitable distribution of community resources, advancing programs related to health, financial stability, nutrition, and education.”
For additional information or to request information regarding the application process, please contact The Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women at 617-626-6520 or online at mcsw@state.ma.us.
