Sunday, September 28, 3:00 *** Join photographer Brian Kaplan to discuss works featured in the exhibition “Not Your Vacation.” Brian Kaplan’s work is part of an extensive project documenting Cape Cod in the off-season. Kaplan’s stark views of shuttered motels and abandoned tourist traps challenge the often nostalgic and idealized depictions of this popular vacation destination. Cleared of summer’s out-of-towners, the Cape Cod of winter as depicted in Kaplan’s unapologetic photographs feels like a desolate ghost town; piles of televisions, discarded fireworks, even a melted ice cream cone speak to the transient nature of leisure time and isolation that remains after the fleeting summer.
