Film: ”Coal Country” (at Library, Sponsored by Sierra Club)
The Framingham Sierra Club will be screening the film “Coal Country” in the Costin Room of the Framingham Public Library, (49 Lexington St, Framingham, MA) on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 7:00pm. The 45 minute film documents modern coal mining in the mountains of Appalachia and the latest form of strip mining called “mountaintop removal” where coal companies blast off the tops of mountains and debris run into valleys, streams and the air near the mines while destroying an ancient mountain range. Miners, communities and activists are deeply split over the situation. An informal discussion will be held after the film. Coal burning provides 25% of the electricity in Massachusetts.
