FILM & DISCUSSION: MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW (1937) 91 min

7:00pm – Discussion Leader: Dr. Arthur Nolletti, Jr., retired Professor of English and Film Studies, Framingham State College.Director Leo McCarey may be better known for celebrated comedies like THE AWFUL TRUTH (1937), romances like LOVE AFFAIR (1939), and the Oscar-winning GOING MY WAY (1944). Yet none of his films is as powerful, or as enduringly moving, as MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW. Set in the Great Depression, it tells the story of an elderly couple (Victor Moore and the inimitable Beulah Bondi) who lose their home when they cannot make the payments and must depend on the charity of their grown children. By turns funny, surprising, wistful, and sad, it remains oneof the few American films to look at ordinary life with extraordinary honesty.
